Bridging the Gap: St Martins Care and North East Ambulance Service Join Forces to Enhance Paramedic Training

With the aim of improving the quality of care and services offered to residents in care homes, St Martins Care has embarked on an innovative partnership with North East Ambulance Service (NEAS).

Over the past 12 months, this collaboration has brought significant success in an exciting admission avoidance project.

Paramedics and the care home connection

Paramedics are often the unsung heroes of the healthcare industry, rushing to respond to emergencies and ensuring that residents of care homes receive critical medical attention.

However, there has been a gap in their training: a lack of exposure to the inside of care homes and the unique challenges of supporting residents living with dementia.

To address this gap, St Martins Care decided to take a proactive approach and reached out to NEAS with an innovative proposal: offering paramedic placements in St Martins Care care homes as part of the apprenticeship program. This would provide a ‘behind the scenes’ experience for the apprentice paramedics, increasing their awareness and understanding of how care homes provide care and support to the people in their care.

A win-win situation

The partnership between St Martins Care and NEAS serves as a powerful example of the impact that collaboration can have across the health and social care system. By offering paramedics first-hand experience in care homes, they are working towards a strong partnership, based on a shared understanding and mutual respect.

For paramedics, these placements hope to give a better understanding of the day-to-day operations in care homes. This knowledge is invaluable when responding to emergency calls.

For St Martins Care, the initiative showcases the commitment to being a proactive provider across the health and social care system. St Martins Care understands the importance of building strong, positive partnerships with organisations like NEAS to enhance the quality of care provided to the people they support.

Looking ahead

As the paramedic placements unfold, the partnership between St Martins Care and NEAS hopes to make a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape. By offering paramedics a glimpse into the world of care homes, this collaboration is on a mission to foster more effective, compassionate, and responsive care.

In a world where providing high-quality care and support is a collective effort, this partnership leads the change, demonstrating that by working together and sharing knowledge, practices can build a stronger, more compassionate health and social care system for everyone who needs it.
