Betty’s Journey: Developing a Career in Care Through Heart and Resilience

Following her progression to Senior Carer and her flourishing return to her Level 3 Diploma, we spoke to Betty McKenzie about her journey with St Martins Care so far.

Finding a professional path that fits

Betty's journey into care was not something she sought out herself. It was her auntie, someone who knew her well, who first suggested she would be better suited to care than the bar work she was doing at the time. Betty decided to give it a try, and she now openly admits her auntie was absolutely right.

What she found was a role that matched her personality, her values, and her natural instinct to look after others. She went on to spend more than ten years in home care before joining St Martins Care, building a wealth of experience and forming bonds with the people she supported. In a touching full-circle moment, many of the individuals she once cared for in their own homes are now residents at Willow Green, and Betty continues to care for them with the same warmth and familiarity.

Career Development

Betty joined St Martins Care at Willow Green in January 2021, starting her journey as a night care worker. Nights suited her lifestyle at the time, and she settled quickly into the role. But as her confidence grew, so did her awareness that she had more to give. The quieter pace of nights did not match her natural energy or her desire to be fully involved in the day-to-day life of the home.

As her personal circumstances changed, the move to day shifts became the natural next step. She describes days as ‘a completely different world,’ busier, more dynamic, and full of the human interaction she thrives on. Embracing that change opened up new opportunities and a deeper involvement in residents' routines and wellbeing.

Betty had already completed her Level 2 before joining Willow Green, and had previously been enrolled on a Level 3 Diploma, though at that point it had not felt like the right time. What makes her progression so inspiring is what came next. With renewed confidence and a clearer sense of direction, she chose to restart her Level 3 Diploma, and this time she has flourished, progressing at distinction level and demonstrating an academic ability she always had but had not yet fully recognised in herself.

Alongside her studies, Betty took on the role of Senior Carer, a responsibility she has embraced with real pride. She completed her Level 3 Safe Administration of Medication, learning medication management from the ground up, and has become a trusted and valued part of the leadership structure on the floor.

Betty’s advice

Betty’s advice is simple and honest: “only step into care if you are truly compassionate.” She believes care is a role that demands heart, patience, and a genuine desire to make a difference. If those qualities are there, she believes the career can be deeply rewarding and full of opportunities to grow.

She would tell new starters that care is a profession where you can build a future, but only if you bring sincerity and kindness to the role. For her, the most important thing is that residents feel valued, respected and safe.

Supporting your career in care

Throughout her journey, Betty has spoken openly about the support she has received from both management and the wider St Martins Care team. She describes feeling guided, encouraged, and believed in, particularly during moments when she doubted herself academically. The decision to restart her Level 3 was made easier because she felt backed by a team who genuinely wanted her to succeed.

She highlights the practical support that has made a real difference too, the opportunity to learn medication management, the chance to step into senior responsibilities, and the reassurance that she could grow at her own pace.

Betty credits St Martins Care with helping her recognise her own potential and giving her the confidence to take on roles she once thought were beyond her reach.

At St Martins Care, we believe in nurturing talent and recognising potential, especially in those who will make our care homes and residents' lives better. We are proud to provide countless opportunities for growth and development, as well as extensive support throughout your whole journey.
