Kirsty’s Journey: Building a Career in Care Leadership
We are proud to provide countless opportunities for growth and development, as well as extensive support throughout your whole journey.
Following her completion of her Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management, we spoke to Kirsty Chapman about her journey with St Martins Care so far.
Finding a passion for care
Kirsty's path into care was not the one she originally planned. With ambitions to join the police, it was a nudge from a close family member that first led her to the sector. Her soon-to-be mother-in-law, herself a senior carer, encouraged Kirsty to give it a try and see what it was like. That was in 2008, and she has never looked back.
What started as an open-minded chance quickly became a calling. Reflecting on that turning point, Kirsty said, "From the very beginning, I realised that caring for people, building trust, and supporting families through difficult moments was exactly where I was meant to be. It wasn't just a job, it was a vocation. Over the years, I've grown more passionate about the sector, especially as I've moved into leadership roles where I can support staff and help shape the culture of a home."
Career Development
Kirsty joined St Martins Care in December 2021 as a Day Senior Carer. Although she already had over a decade of experience in the sector, joining St Martins Care felt like a meaningful new chapter, a place to grow, contribute, and build something lasting. From the outset, she felt trusted and valued, and that foundation gave her the confidence to keep pushing forward.
Just a few months later, in May 2022, that confidence was met with recognition. Kirsty was promoted to Deputy Manager, a step that significantly deepened her understanding of leadership and responsibility. It was a substantial progression, but one she embraced fully, motivated by a desire to support her colleagues, strengthen practice, and ensure residents received the highest quality of care.
Kirsty's development did not stop there. In December 2024, she completed her Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management, an achievement she describes as one she is incredibly proud of. Alongside this, she undertook specialist training, including Dysphagia Train-the-Trainer, equipping her to support the wider team with more advanced knowledge and raise the standard of care across the home.
Looking back at everything she has achieved, Kirsty is clear that her progression has been shaped by the people around her, noting that the calm, structured and person-centred approach of those she has worked alongside has set the standard for what good leadership looks like.
Kirsty’s advice
From Senior Carer to Deputy Manager, with a Level 5 qualification and specialist training to her name, Kirsty's journey is a powerful example of what dedication and the right environment can make possible.
Her advice to anyone considering a career in care is: "My biggest piece of advice is simple: believe in yourself. Care is not 'just a job.' It's a profession where you can build a future, develop skills you never expected, and make a real difference every single day. Some days will be challenging, but every day matters. If you show compassion, curiosity and commitment, the opportunities will come. Don't underestimate what you bring. You don't need to have experience, you just need the right attitude and the willingness to learn. Ask questions, be open, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. That's where growth happens."
Supporting your career in care
Throughout her time at St Martins Care, Kirsty has experienced consistent, meaningful support at every stage of her progression. From strong mentoring by the home manager and senior management, to being enrolled onto her Level 5 and encouraged to pursue specialist training, the opportunities have always been there for her to take.
Describing what that support has meant to her, Kirsty said, "St Martins Care has supported me from the moment I joined. They didn't just give me a job, they gave me opportunities, guidance and belief. From day one, I had strong mentoring from both the home manager and senior management. When I expressed interest in progressing, they didn't hesitate. They enrolled me onto my Level 5, encouraged me to take on additional training, and created an environment where I could grow in confidence and capability. St Martins Care's wider culture has also played a huge part. There is always someone at the end of the phone, always someone willing to help, and always a sense that development is encouraged, not just allowed. That support has been essential in helping me grow into a strong, capable Deputy Manager."
