Learning Disability Care - How we Support our Residents

At St Martins Care, we have spent over 10 years developing supported living services for adults with learning disabilities. Our mission is simple: to help people live fulfilling lives with dignity, independence, and choice, no matter their age.

Key Principles of our Approach

At the heart of our service is listening to families and individuals, involving them in care planning and decision-making to ensure that their needs and preferences are central to the support we provide.

Our care staff receive ongoing training and development to ensure they have the skills and knowledge needed to deliver compassionate, high-quality care. We design our services to maximise choice and independence, giving people control over their daily lives, while ensuring care is provided in settings that encourage active participation in the community.

Every aspect of our approach focuses on dignity, privacy, and human rights, helping individuals enjoy a good and meaningful life each day. The ethos and values of our staff foster confidence, inclusion, and empowerment, while the environments we create ensure that every individual feels valued and respected.

Meeting the Needs of Adults with Learning Disabilities

As people with learning disabilities age, they often face unique health and wellbeing challenges. Age-related conditions, communication barriers, and delays in diagnosis can mean preventable or treatable issues can go unaddressed. Mental health conditions are also more common, making personalised, attentive care essential.

At St Martins Care, we take an active role in advocating for each individual’s health needs. For example, older women with a learning disability experiencing perimenopause or menopause are supported through careful monitoring, access to medical advice, and personalised treatment plans, ensuring their wellbeing, comfort, and dignity are prioritised.

Evolving Care for Modern Lives

Transforming care means creating community-based services where adults can thrive. At St Martins Care, we provide truly person-centred support that promotes independence while respecting each individual. Our services are tailored to meet the complex needs of older adults with learning and physical disabilities, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to lead a meaningful, fulfilling life.

With over 10 years’ experience in learning disability care, we have developed the specialist skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality support. As individuals age, we have adapted our services to continue achieving meaningful outcomes, culminating in the launch of a new service in July 2025. This service combines our expertise in both elderly and learning disability care, offering a calm, relaxing environment where older adults’ needs, independence, and wellbeing are prioritised.

Putting Policy into Practice

At Windermere Grange Care Home, we offer a bespoke service for adults with learning disabilities in a smaller setting. Residents benefit from personalised bedrooms, communal spaces, and enhanced bathing facilities to support mobility. Continuity of care ensures they remain in a familiar environment with staff they know and trust.

We also offer planned respite care, giving family carers regular breaks and supporting smooth transitions to long-term residential care if needed.

A Testament to Person-Centred Care

The impact of our approach can be seen in the progress of the people we support. Feedback received from an advocate for an individual we support at our learning disability service:

‘Patricia has been at Windermere Grange for quite some time now and has made amazing progress since moving there…I don't honestly think that Patricia would have had the same quality of care anywhere else and truly believe that Windermere is the best place for Patricia to be. Since moving, every area of Patricia's life has improved which is amazing to see. What is even more amazing is that staff have the ability to include Patricia is all that they do and really make her feel part of Windermere and also allow her to feel valued, Patricia's journey and progress made has been completely unique to her needs.’

Stories like Patricia’s demonstrate the difference a person-centred, supportive environment can make. At St Martins Care, transforming care isn’t just a policy, it’s a promise to ensure that people with learning disabilities can live full, active lives, supported by a compassionate and skilled team.
