Exploring different types of care

Exploring different types of care

When searching for the type of care you need, it can often be overwhelming to see the amount of options available.

When searching for the type of care you need, it can often be overwhelming to see the amount of options available. Care homes offer different types of care to appeal to any resident’s needs. At St Martins Care, we offer Dementia care, residential care, nursing care, respite care, and learning disability care in our care homes.

The following article unpacks the different types of care, and how St Martins Care offers support in different ways to residents in our homes.

What is Dementia Care?

Dementia care offers 24-hour support from trained staff for people living with Dementia. When it is no longer possible to receive the necessary care at home, perhaps due to mobility challenges, memory challenges, or feelings of anxiety, Dementia care can offer a safe, supportive and enriching environment.

The care can include support with medication, personal care, meals, daily routine and meaningful activities. With staff always on hand to help, a high level of continuous care is available to residents day and night.

St Martin’s Care - Dementia Care

At St Martin’s Care, we have specially designed environments to encourage a safe, engaging and comforting atmosphere for those living with Dementia. Every aspect of our spaces are tailored to individual preferences, helping residents retain a sense of self, independence and choice. The immediate surroundings can have a huge impact on quality of life, especially when people with Dementia require a more stimulating or comforting environment, when life can bring confusion.

All of our homes have staff who are trained in the latest Dementia care practices, and have extensive experience in various stages of the condition. The team are both knowledgeable and compassionate, providing the resident with a bespoke care plan and specialised activities. Families can feel confident that their loved ones are continuously supported, enriched and cared for.

What is Residential Care?

When it is no longer safe or easy to live alone, residential care offers support to deal with challenges such as mobility, cooking, shopping and other daily tasks. 24-hour care is therefore available for when it is increasingly difficult to cope without assistance.

Residential care offers a long-term solution, tailored to individual needs to help residents live safely and comfortably with continuous assistance.

St Martins Care - Residential Care

St Martins Care residential care is person-centred, and meets all the unique needs of the resident to make sure they are content. It is encouraged for the residents to be themselves, express their individuality, and make themselves at home. They can even decorate their rooms with their own furniture!

The homes not only offer around the clock care, but also offer extra amenities such as hair salons and gardens to create a friendly, comfortable and community-driven environment. Residential care is offered at all of our homes and promotes meaningful lives in social yet independent living facilities, with access to social activities, entertainment and a friendly senior community.

The care is personalised to all residents, meaning substantial support is available. Sometimes, residential care is combined with nursing care when medically required.

What is Nursing Care?

Nursing care supports people with complex health needs, disabilities, or recovery. Offering 24-hour support, this type of care has a focus on medical care from a team of on-site nurses. There are many similarities between residential care and nursing care, with the key difference being medical support.

The intention of nursing care is to improve health, manage symptoms, and help residents live comfortably and meaningfully.

St Martins Care - Nursing Care

Nursing care at St Martins Care offers compassionate, vital support to residents. A registered nurse is always on hand, overseeing health, well-being and care day and night. This type of care is particularly relevant for people who require a higher level of medical attention and assistance with daily living activities.

Just like in residential care, we place great importance on independence and dignity. Residents are encouraged to be involved in shaping their daily routines, making choices which matter to them.

Our homes that offer nursing care are equipped to help with everything from medication management and wound care, to rehabilitation and support with daily tasks. With dedicated nurses providing continuous support, residents and their families can feel confident and supported knowing expert care is always close by.

What is Respite Care?

Respite care offers a short-term care solution, often intended for carers to take a short break from their role so they can rest, recover and relax. It also aids in the transition from living alone to residential care.

Respite care can range from a few hours to a few weeks, depending on what the individual and their carer require. What works best depends on their circumstances and preferences.

St Martin’s Care - Respite Care

We recognise the transition to full time care can be challenging, which is why we offer high-quality, short term stays.

It can be challenging and demanding to continuously give care to a loved one, and it is important to consider easing the burden of care momentarily to restore energy and welcome a life balance. Respite care is a great solution for this.

Respite care means something different for everyone, depending on their individual needs. We provide pre-planned stimulation activities and care from our compassionate, reliable fully trained team. All of our homes offer this service and each have a welcoming, social atmosphere.

The resident can expect a variety of activities, social interaction, cooked meals, increased stimulation, and a welcomed change of routine.

When transitioning to full time care with St Martins, it can be beneficial to have experienced respite care first, meaning residents have become familiar with the staff, adjusted to the routines of the home and experienced the amenities on offer. This can reduce the stress of moving for the resident and their families.

Emergency respite is also offered in our homes, ensuring support is available when it is needed most.

What is Learning Disabilities Care?

Adults with disabilities, such as autism spectrum or other complex needs, may require support from a care home. This can help support residents in household tasks, personal care, medication management and building community connections.

St Martins Care - Learning Disabilities Care

At St Martins care, we offer specialist support for people who may live with disabilities, where more complex medical support is required. Our highly skilled team works to develop a care plan which reflects their health needs, routines, and the things that matter most to them.

Activities are often considered for the resident to encourage engagement, provide new experiences, and focus on becoming part of the local community. Social and leisure activities can be adapted for enrichment in the home, too.

The focus on Learning Disability support is that it is more than just a place to live - it becomes a home. Physical, emotional, and educational needs are considered for each individual to provide independence and new experiences.
